OH&S - Staying Safe and Comfortable

Most of our Marshals bring along a kit bag to events with the following:

What to bring to an Event

Like many sports, Motorcycle Racing is held regardless of the prevailing weather conditions. Rarely is an event cancelled due to weather. As a Flag Marshal you will be "manning" a corner for most of the day and you should be prepared for weather extremes.

Most of our Marshals bring along a kit bag to events with the following:

  • Race Marshals Victoria uniform or Heavy Duty orange work shirt and long work pants. We recommend the shirt be long sleeved to provide sun protection during summer months.
  • Waterproof orange jacket and pants for wet conditions.
  • Orange Fleecy or Windcheater for cooler conditions.
  • Leather Gloves or Heavy Duty Gardening Gloves to protect your hands.
  • Cap/Hat, sunglasses and 30 SPF Sunscreen.
  • Neck warmer or balaclava for cold conditions or a cotton bandanna that can be watered down in hot conditions.
  • Sturdy and waterproof footwear such as work boots. Footwear should be comfortable as you spend quite some time standing.
  • Folding Chair (for Mt Gambier Mac Park)
  • Water and snacks. Whilst you are provided with lunch, snacks and water it is always good to have an extra supply of snacks and water on hand.

At an Event

At every event we hold a Flag Marshals Briefing before the commencement of racing each racing day. It is important all Flag Marshals attend this briefing as it includes a safety briefing, flag point allocation, radio and channel allocation and any other pertinent information.

If you have any health issues or take medication that may impact on your ability to fulfil your flag marshalling duties please discuss this with the Club Secretary prior to the event or with the Chief Marshal on the day of the event. If you are taking medication please ensure you have it with you and use/take as prescribed.

During an event stay aware of the weather conditions. Exposure to extreme hot and cold conditions is one of the main OH&S risks associated with being a marshal.

To reduce the risk of heat or cold exposure ensure you are prepared with the right clothing. In cold and wet conditions, it is important to keep moving, use marshal shelters where available and have warm fluids and food. In hot conditions, stay hydrated, wear lighter clothing and use appropriate protection from direct sunlight.

The environment around your marshal position is also important. Make sure you report any risks to the Chief Marshal and remove any hazardous material, particularly tripping hazards, from your area if safe to do so. We want you to have a safe and enjoyable event.
